10,000 Konkan schools get a makeover

The divisional commissioner for Konkan Region Prabhakar Deshmukh started an initiative Ek Diwas Shaalesaathi or One Day for School in all the five districts of Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg within Konkan region.

Over 10,000 Zilla Parishad schools in Konkan region are witnessing transformation by availing computers, laptops and providing toilet facilities. Interestingly, alumni associations, and ex-students along with local NGOs have contributed by providing educational and other infrastructure worth over Rs 3 crore and by donating in cash over Rs 1 crore for these schools.

The divisional commissioner for Konkan Region Prabhakar Deshmukh started an initiative Ek Diwas Shaalesaathi or One Day for School in all the five districts of Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg within Konkan region. More than 3,000 employees including Deshmukh as well as all district collectors along with over 500 elected representatives conducted classes during the school visits at all 10,577 Zilla Parishad schools. 

Forming school management committee in conjugation with mother parent’s association has resulted in sorting out issues like having a quality toilet for girl students. The Alibaug Zilla Parishad CEO Rajesh Narvekar informed DNA that the local Prabhat Poultry which has its outlet at Dadar in Mumbai has its poultry unit in Alibaug, and it has decided to provide eggs free of cost once a week for all the Zilla Parishad schools in their area of operation.

Balkrishna Inamdar of the Rotary Club of Palghar has provided for toilet construction in Palghar ZP school while Gayatri from L&T has donated for setting up a Science laboratory at a ZP school in Talasari (Palghar Taluka).

Deshmukh informed that the school visits and the classes by all the officials on a single day was organised in two phases during the 2016-17 academic year, and the third phase will be conducted in January and February. 

The initiative has resulted in improvement of schools with respect to infrastructure as well as creating awareness about the importance of education among the villagers. There are many schools where teachers themselves are buying laptops to impart computer-aided education to students and they are introducing e-learning.
