The International Criminal Court (ICC) has said that Libya can put Muammar Gaddafi’s son and one-time heir apparent Saif al-Islam on trial at home, provided that international standards are met.

ICC prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo also stressed that the Hague court’s judges must be involved in the case.

“Our International Criminal Court acts when the national system cannot act," Moreno-Ocampo told reporters in Tripoli,” the Los Angeles Times quoted Moreno-Ocampo, as saying.

“If they prosecute the case here, we will discuss with them how to inform the judges and they can do it. But our judges have to be involved,” he added.

Meanwhile, Libya’s interim justice minister Mohammed Alagi said Saif al-Islam would receive a fair trial in the country.

“We are inviting international organizations to witness the trial,” Alagi said.

The international court has charged Saif al-Islam with crimes against humanity committed during attempts to suppress the uprising that toppled his father.

Saif al-Islam was captured on Saturday in the southern Saharan hinterlands and is being held in the western town of Zintan.
