British royal Prince Harry said in an interview aired on Monday he would like to return to Afghanistan but was unsure if it would be allowed.

The 25-year-old grandson of Queen Elizabeth, and third in line to the British throne, left Afghanistan prematurely two years ago amid fears for his security and for those soldiers fighting alongside him after news leaked that he was serving on the frontline as a British army officer.

"I would love to go back, I really would," he told ABC's "Good Morning America" TV program. "As long as my military career allows it and politically it's allowed, then I will serve my country as any other soldier."

He said it was difficult to have not returned to Afghanistan.

"It is hard. At the end of the day you train for war, it's as simple as that," he said. "If we could be at peace then fantastic, but if we're at war then you want to be with your brothers in arms."

Prince Harry's ten week deployment in 2008 marked the first time a British royal had been in combat since the Falklands war 28 years ago, when Prince Andrew flew helicopters.

After his presence became known, there were heightened concerns he could become a target of the Taliban, al-Qaeda or other Islamist militants operating in Afghanistan.

The prince has spent a weekend in the New York area, playing in a charity polo match and attending other events to raise funds for charities working with AIDS victims in Lesotho, and with war veterans.
