Nepal Prime Minister Jhala Nath Khanal on Sunday evening tendered his resignation to President Ram Baran Yadav, after six months and 11 days in the top post.

As per constitutional provisions, the president asked Khanal to bear the caretaker role till a new government takes over, Xinhua reported.

Khanal, the chairman of the Communist Party Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist, was elected prime minister on February 3 after a seven-month long impasse due to rounds of futile voting.
