Frisking of Indian ambassador: Political parties demand reciprocal approach

Foreign secretary Nirupama Rao pointed that India is already trying to sort out previous instances with the US government and said that such an act wasn’t “good diplomacy”.

There was a strong demand to balance security with respect.

Political parties and women groups demanded a reciprocatory gesture towards American diplomats visiting India. “It is not enough for the Indian government to say that such frisking is unacceptable. Since the US authorities have stated that ambassadors are not exempt from security searches, what the government should do is to adopt a reciprocal approach. The US ambassador in India should be subjected to security searches on domestic flights in India,” the CPI (M) said in a statement.

In Delhi, BJP’s women’s wing held a protest near the American Embassy demanding an apology. The protesters demanded that the US Ambassador to India Timothy J Roemer should communicate the feelings expressed by women protesters to the US government
