US: After Oregon shooting, possible gunman reported at Virginia Commonwealth University campus

The issue comes a day after a gunman in Oregon opened fire at students in Umpqua Community College, killing nine.

Chaos spread across Virginia Commonwealth University on Friday after rumours of a possible gunman on campus spread, reports Reuters. The police, who rushed to the scene, has given in an all clear and asked the school to return to business as normal. 

According to Daily Mail, just before 11 am, the school had issued an alert about a possible armed subject near the school premises. In the notice, the suspect was also described as a male wearing a square military-style hat and backpack. 

The police reached the site but were not able to confirm the report and asked the university authorities to resume classes, reports Daily Mail. 

The alert comes a day after a gunman in Oregon opened fire at students in Umpqua Community College, killing nine. 

The gunman stormed into a classroom in Snyder Hall on campus, shot a professor at point-blank range, then ordered cowering students to stand up and state their religion before he shot them one by one, according to survivors' accounts. Seven people were hospitalised, three of them listed as critical. The killer died after exchanging gunfire with two police officers who confronted him.
