Eight years ago, the United States of America got its first black president. It was, in a way, Dr Martin Luther King’s dream come true. At the former President Barack Obama’s farewell speech, what stood out was his humility and honesty, and a sense of pride for having given the country everything he had promised.

In his speech that touched the hearts of millions of Americans in and outside the US, Obama spoke about the country’s achievements since 9/11, making gay marriage legal, and ensuring healthcare was accessible for everyone. He emphasised on how the US offered equal economic opportunities to all (and not only Americans).

But naysayers have been asking several questions about Obama’s Presidency— why wasn’t there anything done about the huge economic debt? Why were citizens unemployed while immigrants got jobs? Why weren’t guns banned, and why did his utopian idea of no racism not come true? Today, there is more hate and racism than ever before. Obama has shown them exactly what is wrong with the country— it was so evident after the recent election that what really brewed hate against Muslim Americans was terrorism, and what brewed hate against immigrants was unemployment and zero job satisfaction in the more rural states.

However, he was not a President to only bring about economic reforms or work on debt control. He was a humanitarian, especially after former President George Bush Jr’s two terms. He showed America’s love for all, and reinforced the basic rights mentioned in the US constitution — equality, happiness, and social change. He set an example for how to treat your fellow workers (with his amazing relationship with Joe Biden) and how to treat your women. He showed us togetherness and the power of teamwork, appreciation and kindness. These are the values and qualities that the US needed after the difficult and ruthless years they had gone through. He gave America hope, above everything, and that is why he got re-elected.

While the whole country wept during his speech, Obama wept with them. He cried for his wife, his family, for Biden, for his country. More than anything else, Obama will be missed for the man he was, and the role model he became for the younger generation.
