Two policemen were killed on Saturday in a rocket attack by militants targeting a convoy of a senior police official who survived the assault in the Gwadar district of Pakistan's restive Balochistan province.

Militants fired rockets at the convoy of Khuzdar district police officer Abdul Aziz Yousafzai near Pasni but he escaped with injuries. However, two policemen were killed and two others critically injured in the attack.

"The DPO is safe as are his family members who were in the convoy as they were going to attend a marriage ceremony in Gwadar city," senior police official Habib Khan said.

"The miscreants fired several rockets at the moving convoy from the mountains but only one hit the target," he said.

The victims were shifted to Basic Health Unit Pasni for treatment as security forces cordoned off the area.

Militants in the area have been regularly targeting vital national installations including railway tracks, power pylons and gas pipelines for almost a decade. Pasni is one of the most troubled areas in Balochistan where militants often target police, security forces and government installations.

In the past, the banned Baloch Liberation Front (BLF) has claimed the responsibility for such attacks. However, there was no claim of responsibility for today's attack.
