A 38-year-old Pakistani woman, who spied for al-Qaeda, was on Wednesday sentenced to five years rigorous imprisonment by an anti-terrorism court. The court sentenced Maria Sultan to five years imprisonment and also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on her.

The court announced the verdict after the prosecution department of Punjab government presented relevant evidence in the case. According to the charge-sheet, Sultan was a member of Al-Qaeda's Lahore chapter.

She allegedly provided sensitive information about the offices of intelligence agencies and some officers to the members of the Al-Qaeda network. She was caught spying near an office of an intelligence agency here and a case was registered against her for spying for Al-Qaeda. "On her information the law enforcement agencies are trying to reach the other members of the network," the court was informed.
