Documents provided by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden have revealed that researchers working with the CIA have been trying to hack Apple security measures on iPhones and iPads for years.

According to the Verge, the documents provide a number of initiatives taken by the CIA that include an attempt to crack encryption keys implanted into Apple's mobile processor, and a method compromising Xcode, the company's tool that is used to create most of iOS apps.

However, the report does not detail any successful measures against Apple but highlights the hypocrisy of the US government and the battle between national security agencies and technology companies.

US researchers' efforts to target Apple's products, as well as those from competitors like Microsoft, were presented at a secret annual CIA-sponsored conference known as the "Jamboree."
