A 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck in the Banda Sea in remote eastern Indonesia on Sunday, US seismologists said, but no tsunami warning was issued.

The quake struck at 00:25 am (1625 GMT Sunday) at a depth of 428 kilometres (265 miles), about 300 kilometres from Ambon Island, the US Geological Survey said.

The epicentre was far from land, and Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency said the quake was not strong enough to trigger a tsunami.

Indonesia experiences frequent seismic and volcanic activity due to its position on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," where tectonic plates collide.
