French forward Kylian Mbappe has become the youngest French soccer player to appear in a major championship after he was capped for his national team against Australia in both teams' 2018 World Cup opener in Russia on Saturday.

The Paris Saint-Germain forward, 19 years and 178 days old, broke the record held by his compatriot Bruno Bellone, who appeared in a major competition - World Cup or European Championship - at 20 years and 118 days in 1982.

France is the sixth youngest team of 32 teams overall at this year's World Cup with an average age of 26.4 years.

France coach Didier Deschamps left veteran striker Olivier Giroud out of his starting 11 for the World Cup opener against Australia and has picked Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele in a young but potent front three with striker Antoine Griezmann.

France is in Group C along with Peru, Australia and Denmark, and is considered one of the favorites to win the title by experts.

Paul Pogba scored in the 80th minute to give France a 2-1 win against Australia in their opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2018. Pogba scored the winning goal as poked the ball in the box over the outstretched arms of Australia goalkeeper Mathew Ryan, off the bottom of the crossbar and just over the goal line.

France had taken the lead in the match when striker Antoine Griezmann was awarded a penalty by the Video Assistant Referee system for the first-ever time in FIFA World Cup

Early in the second half, Griezmann was brought down by a sliding tackle from Socceroos defender Josh Risdon in the 57th minute. Referee Andres Cunha initially thought it was a fair tackle at Kazan Arena.

The Uruguayan official was summoned to review the footage, however, and duly awarded the spot kick to Griezmann who thumped the ball into the right corner past Australia keeper Mat Ryan.

Howeverm, rejoicing France fans were then stunned into silence minutes later when Samuel Umtiti was penalised for handball in the area on the hour mark.

Australia captain Mile Jedinak thumped the ball home to put the game level at 1-1.
