Ranji Trophy: Mumbai begin with a big win over Railways

Mumbai began their Ranji Trophy season with a resounding 10-wicket victory over Railways in the opening Elite Group match at Karnail Singh Stadium on Sunday.

    Mumbai began their Ranji Trophy season with a resoudning 10-wicket victory over Railways in the opening Elite Group match at Karnail Singh Stadium on Sunday.

    The 39-time champions also bagged a bonus point to open their tally with a maximum six from the encounter.

    Mumbai, who scored a mammoth 483 in the first innings courtesy Rohit Sharma's 175, bowled out Railways for 256 in the first innings.

    Following on, Railways were dismissed for 244 in their second innings Sunday and Mumbai reached the target (18 runs) without losing any wicket.

    Shivakant Shukla (77) showed some resistance, but once he was caught by Prashant Naik off Ramesh Powar, Mumbai went for the kill.

    Left-arm spinner Iqbal Abdulla (3-29) was the pick of the Mumbai bowlers while Dhawal Kulkarni and Suryakumar Yadav bagged two each.

    The remaining six matches in the Elite Division ended in a draw, reflecting on the team's safe approach in the first round as also the placid nature of pitches that saw most team's pile up big totals.

    The scene was no different in the Plate Division where Himachal Pradesh defeated Tripura by an innings and 15 runs at the Maharaja Bir Bikram College Stadium in Agartala. The five other matches in the Plate division ended in draws.

    In reply to Himachal's mammoth 531, Tripura could only manage 304 and 212 in the both the innings.

    Kaushal Acharjee (57)and Vinayak Samant (50) put up a fight for Tripura after resuming the innings at 31 for one on the fourth morning of the match. But their resistance did not prove to be enough as Himachal's off-spinner Gurvinder Singh ran through the side, picking five for 52.

    Elite Divison

    Group A:
    Udaipur: Karnataka 623 for six declared, Rajasthan 255 and 115 for 1 (Vaibhav Deshpande 52). Result: Match Drawn.

    Mohali: Punjab 350 and 280 for 7 in 88 overs M Sidhana 76, Karan Goel 55, Mandeep Singh 51; Piyush Chawla 3-84 Studip Tyagi 2-30), Uttar Pradesh 596 for 5 decl. (Tanmay Srivastava 62, Mohammad Kaif 65, Parvinder Singh 138, Suresh Raina 204 not out, Manpreet Gony 2 for 102). Result:  Match Drawn.

    Delhi: Mumbai 483 and 20/0 (Wasim Jaffer 19 not out), Railways 256 and 244 (Shivakant Shukla 77, Iqbal Abdulla 3-29, Suryakumar Yadav 2-1). Result: Mumbai won by 10 wickets.

    Cuttack: Saurashtra 545, Orissa 494 for 7 in 199 overs (Bikas Pati 43, Natraj Behera 209, Biplab Samantray 41, Abhilash Mallick 64, Jaydev Unadkat 2 for 82, Pratik Mehta 2 for 12). Result: Draw.

    Group B:

    Kolkata: Bengal 560 for 6 decl. Gujarat 495 all out in 170.2 overs. (Parthiv Patel 143, Priyank Panchal 139). Result: Match Drawn.

    Delhi: Haryana 293 and 318 for 8 in 114 overs (Nitin Saini 44, Sunny Singh 157) Delhi 352 in 119.4 overs (Milind Kumar 119, Mithun Manhas 29, Rajat Bhatia 107, Pawan Negi 30 not out, Sachin Rana 3 for 68, Amit Vashisht 3 for 80, Dhruv Singh 2 for 59). Result: Match Drawn

    Chennai: Baroda 38 for no loss in 12 overs (Kedar Devdhar 25 not out, Aditya Waghmode 10 not out) vs Tamil Nadu. Result: Match Drawn

    Plate Division

    Group A:
    Agartala: Himachal Pradesh 531, Tripura 304 and 212 in 87.1 overs (Kaushal Acharjee 57, Vinayak Samant 50, Gurvinder Singh 5/52).
    Result: Himachal Pradesh won by an innings and 15 runs

    Palam: Andhra 219 and 307 (Gonnabatule Chiranjeevi 105 not out,  Mohammad Khalid 4 for 78), Services 95 and 229 for 2 (Jasvir Singh 133, Paidikalva Vijaykumar 1 for 31). Result: Match Drawn

    Nagpur: Vidarbha 557 for 7 decl and 3 for 0, Kerala 431 ( V. A. Jagadeesh 88,  Sony Cheruvathur 104, Sairaj Bahutule 4 for 92).
    Result: Match Drawn

    Group B:
    Hyderabad: Hyderabad 416 and 113 for 2 (Ravi Teja 64 not out, Shankar Rao 2 for 33, Jharkhand 280 (Ishank Jaggi 8, Amir Hashmi 68, Lalith Mohan 5 for 55). Result: Match Drawn

    Srinagar: Assam 297 for four in 90 overs, Jammu & Kashmir 232 for 3 (Ian Dev Singh, Dhiraj Goswami 1 for 24). Result: Match Drawn

    Porvorim (Goa): Maharashtra 443 and 91, Goa 405 and 18 for 1 (Swapnil Ashnodkar 5, Abhishek Raut 8, Samad Fallah 1 for 15).
