On a day when Delhi seamers dictated terms to Mumbai’s batting line-up on a green top at Roshanara, debutant Suryakumar Yadav defied the odds.

The 20-year-old middle-order batsman rescued the defending champions from a debacle with a brilliant half century on Day One of the Ranji Trophy Super League tie on Wednesday.

Yadav struck a brilliant 89-ball 73 with 15 hits to the fence and helped Mumbai reach a competitive 267. In reply, Delhi were on 47 for 2 at stumps. Skipper Mithun Manhas (5*) and opener Shikhar Dhawan (25*, 56b, 5x4) were at the crease at the end of day’s play.

While Delhi fast bowlers Sumeet Narwal and Pradeep Sangwan picked up four wickets each, Mumbai pacer Ajit Agarkar accounted for the wickets of Unmukt Chand (11) and the in-form Virat Kohli (5).

Mumbai, who chose to bat first, lost wicket-keeper batsman Omkar Gurav (1) in the third over of the day. One-drop Praful Waghela, too, failed to impress on his return.

Sahil Kukreja looked good in the middle and played some delightful strokes before being sent being sent back by Parvinder Awana for 27.

Kukreja’s dismissal brought Rohit Sharma in. Sharma and Jaffer took the responsibility on their experienced shoulders. Things were looking good for Mumbai as the duo had put on a stand of 47 runs before Jaffer was caught by Mayank Tenlan off Sangwan.

It was Yadav’s turn to showcase his skills. Having scored a double hundred in the final of CK Nayudu Trophy against Baroda earlier this week, Yadav looked confident in his approach.  He, along with Sharma, gave Delhi bowlers some tough time. The fifth wicket pair stitched together a 62-run stand before Sharma edged Narwal to wicket keeper Punit Bisht for 37.

Sharma’s wicket did not cost Mumbai dearly as Yadav along with Agarkar (35) and Iqbal Abdulla (31, 6x4) guided Mumbai to a challenging total of 267.

Yadav, however, was disappointed not to score a century when he was set. “It is disappointing to get out when you are almost close to the three figure mark. I was trying to guide the ball for a single but it ballooned into the hands of Kohli. I would have been happier if I had got a hundred on debut,” Yadav said.
