Olympic flame carriers put their prized torches up for sale on eBay merely one hour after taking part in the historic relay.

Andrew Bell was among the first entrusted with the iconic emblem as it began its 8,000-mile trip across Britain.

Yet the 32-year-old tried to cash in on the once-in-a-lifetime honour by putting the torch and his Olympic outfit up for sale soon afterwards.

And at least four others have followed suit, with some advertising their torches and kit before taking part in the procession

“I understand some people may find the idea of selling an Olympic torch offensive but we could genuinely use the money,” the Sun quoted Dad Andrew, of Probus, Cornwall

“Without giving you a sob story, we’ve a lovely baby boy and my wife has just gone back to work after maternity leave. Also, the torch is nearly a metre long and looks weird on the mantelpiece,” he said.

On eBay, Andrews who finished his relay leg in Marazion, Cornwall, just after 9am, invited bidders to be one of the first to own this ultimate Olympic souvenir.

Games chiefs say the torches are worth 495 pounds but were given to bearers for 295 pounds.

The different eBay ads attracted dozens of bids but with some, of up to 150,000 pounds, clearly hoaxes.

Rowing enthusiast Andrew later withdrew his ad but others remained, including from sellers in Doncaster, Ipswich and Conwy, North Wales – all locations the flame is yet to visit.

In total, 8,000 bearers will help take it through 1,019 cities, towns and villages, each carrying it about 300 metres before using it to light the next torch.

The bearers were nominated for the honour for their achievements and community work.

“The majority of people will want to keep their torch, but ultimately it’s their property and for them to decide what to do with it,” a spokeswoman said.

“We hope the torches and uniforms find good homes,” she added.
