New Zealand Cricket is ready to relieve John Wright if the former India coach is willing to take up the Kolkata Knight Riders job. Justin Vaughan, the CEO of the NZC, had told DNA that he would seriously look into the matter if Wright wanted to coach the IPL team. The former India coach, currently in Chennai, will be making a presentation before the top KKR management on August 30.

“We have not heard from John but we are willing to accommodate his other commitments,” Vaughan told DNA. Wright is currently associated with NZC as a high performance manager and a selector without vote.

“We are keen to retain his services in whichever way it is possible but we will give a serious thought to his KKR offer,” Vaughan said. Wright, who is widely tipped to reunite with former India skipper Sourav Ganguly at KKR, is tight-lipped over his choice.

Meanwhile, Richard Pybus, who was interviewed by the KKR bosses, said he was looking for a positive response.

“I’m quite happy with the way the presentation went and I thought they were also
happy with my views,” Pybus told DNA from South Africa.

The former Pakistan coach said he is excited about being involved with an IPL team. “I’ve made my views clear to them. It would be their decision. But I would say it is an exciting and challenging job.” Pybus, however, was unwilling to speak on the other candidates.

Among others, KKR has already met Dermot Reeve, Michael Bevan, Lalchand Rajput, WV Raman and Chandrakant Pandit. Former India skipper Ganguly said former Pakistan skipper Wasim Akram and Mumbai coach Praveen Amre, besides Wright, have been invited to make a presentation on August 30. “Akram is part of the final few coaches who have been called on August 30. He along with (John) Wright and (Praveen) Amre have been called,” said Ganguly in Kolkata.

However, there are conflicting reports about Akram’s interest in the job. A report from Karachi has said that Akram is not interested in a full-time coaching stint with KKR while an agency report from Delhi has said that the former Pakistan skipper is keen on the job.

“I will be there for sure on Sunday and I am keen. I am ready,” Akram was quoted in the report. “I have never done formal coaching before. It is a different skill and is honed over a period of time. It requires a lot of patience and that is something I have acquired over a period of time. I came to Delhi to teach bowling skills to youngsters and that was a good experience. So it’s worth giving the KKR job a shot,” he said.
