Ramesh Powar has been the backbone of Mumbai’s spin attack over the past decade. However, a side strain during his match-saving knock of 125 against Punjab in the first round of the Ranji Trophy has ruled him out of action till now.
Harmeet Singh, 17, got his big break in the absence of Powar. The left-arm-spinner made an impressive debut for Mumbai, returning with the match figures of 7-127 in the Ranji Trophy Super League tie against Himachal Pradesh on Friday. Along with another young left-arm spinner Iqbal Abdulla, Singh was instrumental in Mumbai recording an 85-run win over Himachal Pradesh.“I was confident that I would do well if I get a chance. I am happy with the way I bowled and contributed to this victory,” Singh said.
Harmeet’srole was to support fellow spinner Iqbal Abdulla. “In Ramesh Powar’s absence, Iqbal was our frontline spinner and my job was to support him,” he added.Mumbai skipper Wasim Jaffer was all praise of Harmeet. “He is a good talent and should be preserved.”
