They are not calling it a union but the franchises of the Indian Premier League (IPL) recently held a meeting in the city. Held at a suburban five-star hotel, the meeting was aimed at ‘exchanging’ views.

Representatives from all nine existing franchises attended the conclave and sent a list of its resolutions to Rajeev Shukla.
Shukla was not immediately available for comment but the IPL chairman has called for an immediate meeting of the governing council. The GC, likely to discuss the points suggested, will be held on December 3 in New Delhi.

Among those attended were Anil Kumble (of RCB), Raghu Aiyar (RR), Devang Bhimjyani (MI), Venky Mysore (KKR) and Abhijit Sarkar (Pune). There was even a representative (Rakesh Singh) from Chennai Super Kings.

It has been learnt that the main topic of discussion was about the Team Kochi players. The majority opinion, apparently, was about the auction next year and the sanctity of the price cap. A few members were of the opinion that there should not be an auction at all and the 27 players of the Team Kochi should be divided equally among the nine teams through a draw of lots with each franchise paying the fee of the players selected.

A section of the gathering was opposed to the IPL’s principle of tiebreak through secret ballot cheque. As the there will be a price cap of about $1 million for the auction, there will be every chance that a few teams will be in a stalemate for a player. Different suggestions were made about the way to break the tie but most franchises felt that by going for a secret ballot cheque, the BCCI/IPL is earning money by creating an uneven playing field. “If there is a secret bidding, the team with the deepest pocket will automatically get the player. It is creating an uneven playing field,” said a franchise official.

Meanwhile, the general impression from the meeting was that Ravindra Jadeja will be the most sought after player at the auction. The only other player who could excite the franchises is Mahela Jayawardene but the interest level for Jadeja seems to be very high among the teams.

As for the meeting, the franchisees refused to call it a union. “There is no need for a union. We thought there is need to discuss the common concerns and views,” said the official admitting that they will be holding such meetings in regular intervals.
