Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard on Thursday highlighted security fears surrounding the Commonwealth Games to be staged in India next month, saying that there were widespread concerns in the run-up to the event.

Gillard told reporters that Australian athletes should decide for themselves whether or not to attend the Games, but she pointed out Canberra's longstanding travel warnings, at www.smartraveller.gov.au, which note the high risk of terror attacks in New Delhi.

She said India was responsible for security at the Games but Australia planned to "boost the number of officials" deployed by Australia in the Indian capital. She was asked if these were security or intelligence officials, but she did not elaborate.

"There is obviously widespread concern about the Commonwealth Games," Gillard told reporters. "The decision on whether to attend the games is obviously a matter for individuals."

Gillard said Australia's travel warnings urge Australians to exercise a high degree of caution in India.

India is scrambling against the clock to save the Games, which are due to open on Oct. 3, after champion athletes quit the showcase event and nations threatened to stay home unless authorities cleaned venues "unfit for human habitation".

Australian world champion discus thrower Dani Samuels pulled out of the Games on Wednesday, citing security fears and concerns about health risks in India, while Australian officials said more athletes could also withdraw.

Sports Minister Mark Arbib on Wednesday said Australia would send more police to India as part of the extra staffing in New Delhi for the games.
