Arjun Kochar (Maharashtra) defeated Junnaid Muzaffar (Jammu and Kashmir), 11-8 11-6 11-5 in the qualifying round of the National Senior Open Squash tournament held at the Cricket Club of India on Sunday. The city youngster is now just one step away from securing a place in the main draw of the tournament.

The Mumbai-boy made full use of his physical advantage to out play his opponent. Taller and bulkier, Kochar used his superior reach and stronger shot to dominate Junnaid in the match. Junnaid put up a brave fight in the first game and did not let the Mumbai lad get away with a big lead, but eventually Kochar surged ahead.

The Jammu & Kashmir lad, who resides and practices in Delhi, was less impressive in the second game giving away a sizable lead to his opponent in the beginning and failed to mount a decent comeback. The contest was all but over in the last game when both the racqueteers appeared to be just going through the motions.

A student of Cathedral & John Connon, Fort, Kochar is a regular participant in all the junior squash tournaments in the city. The 15-year-old is also simultaneously participating in Western India Open Squash tournament for juniors being held at the same venue. Playing on his home court, he has played three matches in two days. All the matches have been facile wins for the youngster and he has dropped just one game, against Sajeed Hussain of Delhi in the first men’s qualifier on Saturday.
