It’s official. Anil Kumble, Javagal Srinath and Venkatesh Prasad are set to enter cricket administration after Brijesh Patel decided to step down and support the former India stalwarts in the forthcoming Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) elections scheduled for November 21.

Patel, a former India cricketer, who has been KSCA secretary since 1998, announced that he will not be contesting the forthcoming polls and will be supporting these former cricketers instead.

DNA, in its edition dated September 28, had reported that Kumble and Srinath may take a plunge into cricket administration. The addition to the list is Venkatesh Prasad. The trio will make an official announcement on Wednesday.

While Kumble will be contesting for the post of KSCA president, Srinath is eyeing the secretary’s post. Prasad will be fighting for one of the three vice-president posts. The two other likely candidates from this panel are Roger Binny and Dr S Krishnamurthy, both of whom are vice-presidents at the moment.

Rahul Dravid, who has been part of this ‘Fab Four’ (Kumble, Prasad and Srinath being the others) of Karnataka cricket, is also likely to support his fellow cricketers. ‘The Wall’ is also likely to play an active role in administration once he hangs up his boots.

Ever since the election dates were announced, speculation was rife about the former players’ entry into administration. It is believed that it was Dravid who actually intervened and convinced Patel to support the cricketers.

“I have decided to step aside and not contest the ensuing elections and support the young distinguished Test cricketers Anil Kumble, Javagal Srinath, Rahul Dravid and others in the coming elections who have pledged to take KSCA forward in the coming challenging years,” Patel said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the latest development has taken the anti-Patel faction, led by KSCA president Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar, by surprise. Even this group was trying to garner support from these cricketers. However, an important member of the faction has maintained that the Wadiyar group will certainly contest the elections and are confident of winning.
