It's no secret that former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag was a bowler's nightmare. The swashbuckling batsman scored at such a brisk pace that he could tilt the balance of a match and set it up for his team in a single session.

The aggression he brought at the top of the order changed the definition of an opening batsman in Indian cricket forever. However, the most astonishing facet of Sehwag's batting was his appetite for humongous scores.  He is the only Indian to have hit a triple-century in Tests and he did it not once, but twice. He had the knack of converting his tons into massive scores which was fascinating, considering the aggressive nature of his batting.

As Sehwag turns 38 on Thursday, here's a list of five monstrous knocks hit by him in his glorious career:

1. 219 v/s West Indies

Sehwag became the second man, after Sachin Tendulkar, to hit an ODI double-century when he bludgeoned the West Indian bowling attack in Indore. This knock was the highest ODI score at that time and included seven sixes and 25 boundaries.

2. 195 v/s Australia

After winning the second Test in Adelaide, Team India had high hopes of winning their first Test series down under during their tour of 2003. However, they failed to capitalise on Sehwag's brilliant century in the first innings and allowed Australia to draw level in the series. The opener had famously tried to hit a six to get to his double-century, but failed. Sehwag's knock, though, remains one of the finest ever in a losing cause.

3. 293 v/s Sri Lanka

Sehwag scored 284 in a single day in this Test match against Sri Lanka at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. However, he failed to add much to his overnight score and missed out on becoming the first man in history to have three triple-centuries to his name.

4. 309 v/s Pakistan

Surpassing VVS Laxman's score of 281, Sehwag became the first Indian to hit a triple-century in Tests, when he destroyed Pakistan's bowling attack in Multan in 2004. This innings set the tone for India's first series victory in Pakistan.

5. 319 v/s South Africa

The Delhi-dasher bullied a quality Proteas bowling attack to notch up the fastest triple-ton in Test history. His score of 319 in this innings still stands as the highest Test score by an Indian.
