Hosts finish with 72 medals including 32 gold

PUNE: The Indians were on top of the world at the Balewadi Sports Complex as they emerged as the giant killers in the third edition of the Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG) here on Friday.

With just the tennis event left in this 7-day sports feast, the hosts finished with 72 medals to emerge as the champions in this edition. In all there were 32 gold, 25 silver and 15 bronze medals.

India had finished 8th in the last edition with 10 medals overall which included two gold and four each in silver and bronze.

Defending champions Australia were second with 63 medals, while England finished third with 40.

Shooting
Smith Singh did not make it to the final round. In the qualifying, the Chandigarh shooter finished 7th. Warlo Rory of Great Britain won the gold while Kazakos Gerogio from Cyprus took the silver and the bronze went to Wilson Ben of Scotland

Weightlifting
Srishti Singh of Bihar was unlucky to have missed out of on gold after she was tied with Mary Opelogo of Samoa, losing out on overall weight. Harbhajan Singh won a silver in the men’s 85 kg category with a total lift of 266 behind Marineau Mathieu of Canada.

Boxing
After eight bouts on the final day of action, India finished with three gold, a silver and three bronze, topping the medals tally in the ring side.

Swimming
Vir Dhaval Khade clinched his second gold on Friday. The Kolhapur swimmer set a time of 22.68, a Games record, ahead of Thomas Barrett of Australia and Conor Leaney of Northern Ireland.

Tennis
Kyra Shroff, Poojashree Venkatesha and Yuki Bhambri, Vijayant Malik lost in the final hurdle. While the women’s team lost to Monika Wejnert and Jade Hopper of Australia 4-6, 6-4, 1-6, the men went down in straight sets 4-6, 0-6 to the New Zealand pair of Logan Machenzie and Finbar Tearney.

Badminton
Indian dominated the badminton event, winning three of the four gold medals in the offing. In the girls’ singles, Saina Nehwal was given a run for her money by N Sikki reddy before winning in straight games 23-21, 22-20. The boys’ final was also an all-India affair with P Guru Sai Dutt prevailing over Aditya Prakash 21-18, 20-22, 21-18. Meanwhile, Skikki Reddy made amends for her loss in the singles as she teamed up with PC Thulasi to win the girls doubles, defeating Mary Alexendra Bruce and Michelle Li. Sai Praneeth. Pranav Chopra won bronze in boys’ doubles.
