International Cricket Council (ICC) President Mustafa Kamal has resigned from his post. He was miffed over being snubbed during the presentation ceremony at World Cup Final on March 29. ICC chairman N Srinivasan presented the trophy to Michael Clarke during the ceremony. According to the constitution of the ICC, the president has to give away the trophy. Kamal resigned after barely spending nine months in the post.
Kamal had also openly expressed his displeasure over umpiring standards in the India-Bangladesh World Cup match on March 19. After India thrashed Bangladesh by 109 runs in the quarterfinal match at the MCG, reports quoted Kamal saying that he might resign from the post of ICC President if needed in protest against "poor umpiring" in that game.
"From what I have seen, the umpiring was very poor. There was no quality in the umpiring. It seemed as if they had gone into the match with something in mind. I am speaking as a fan, not as the ICC president," Kamal had said. "The ICC will see if this was done deliberately. Everything is on record. The ICC has to investigate and inquire the issue to see if there's anything to it," he added.
The bone of contention was a close no-ball reprieve that centurion Rohit Sharma got during the game. The ICC, however, had rejected Kamal's outburst against the match officials as "unfortunate" and "baseless". "The ICC has noted Mr Mustafa Kamal's comments, which are very unfortunate but made in his personal capacity. As an ICC President, he should have been more considerate in his criticism of ICC match officials, whose integrity cannot be questioned," ICC CEO Dave Richardson had said in a statement.
At that time, however Kamal had rejected all speculations of quitting. But his public outburst didn't go down well with the ICC bosses. He was subsequently absent from the World Cup prize distribution ceremony. Kamal was extremely miffed by the snub and said that he was contemplating legal proceedings against the ICC for denying him his 'constitutional' right to present the trophy. "I will go back to Bangladesh, consult my lawyers and will also have a word with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina about this. This is unconstitutional and can’t be accepted," Kamal was quoted as saying by abplive.in.
