OTTAWA: Canadian hockey star Jose Theodore has been slapped with a two-year suspension from international competition on Friday after tesing positive for a banned substance.

The 29-year-old Colorado Avalanche goaltender failed a drug test during a random pre-Olympic screening on December 9 for a substance that can be used to mask steroid use, Cori McPhail, spokesperson for the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES), said.

News of Theodore's positive test was widely reported in North American newspapers last month.

The CCES made it official on Friday by announcing that Theodore's urine sample tested for Finasteride which is listed as a banned drug by the World Anti-Doping Agencey.
