Argentina captain Lionel Messi's statue in Buenos Aires was recently was cut in half and half by unidentified vandals. The sculpture was unveiled in 2016 by mayor Horacio Rodriguez Larreta, in a bid to convince the Barcelona superstar to  reverse his international retirement following the Copa America final defeat. 

"The statue of Lionel Messi fell victim to an act of vandalism that left the footballer's sculpture without its top half," a statement from the Buenos Aires city government read. "The City Government is now working on its repair."

Messi's statue is one amongst many on the banks of the Rio de la Plata as part of a 'Glory Walkway' honouring Argentine sports stars
