Bringing back memories of the tragic death of Australian cricketer Phil Hughes, an East Bengal Club cricketer died following an injury suffered in the cricket field. Ankit Keshri, the club's former under-19 captain died on Monday morning following a cardiac arrest. He was 20 years-old.

The incident happened on Friday, during Bengal Division 1's match between East Bengal Club and Bhawanipore Club. In the 44th over, Keshri bumped into bowler Sourabh Mondal while taking a catch. He immediately fell on the ground and lost consciousness. The right-handed batsman was rushed to a private nursing home and was undergoing treatment for three days.

His condition was improving and later was stable. But at midnight he suffered a cardiac arrest and succumbed to his injuries on Monday morning.

Meanwhile, an East Bengal Club match scheduled for today has been postponed following Keshri's death.  "It is extremely saddening to hear the news of Keshri's demise. He was not just a dynamic player but also an equally good player. It is a huge loss for us," said Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) treasurer Biswarup Dey.

Hours after the former captain of East Bengal Club’s under 19 team, Ankit Keshri succumbed to its on-field injury, his father Raj Kumar Keshri alleged medical negligence.

“Ankit’s situation was stable on Friday. Tests carried out on him showed that he was doing well. Doctors told us that since his condition is stable now, he can be shifted to general ward from the ICU,” said Raj Kumar Keshri.

Pointing towards the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), the father said that Ankit was shifted to Nightingale hospital from AMRI on instructions of the CAB to the doctors. “He was shifted to Nightingale on the instructions of CAB officials. He was doing well in the previous hospital. He was not treated properly in this hospital as a result of which he succumbed to his injuries,” added the bereaved father. Meanwhile, his body was taken to the CAB office where his fellow players and relatives paid him last respects and later they joined his family for the funeral.
