The new program being tested uses machine learning to grasp complex word relationships and use them in the right context.
SwiftKey, the keyboard app developers, are building a new learning software that will (hopefully) eventually be able to write entire sentences for you, and maybe more.
They've just released an experimental keyboard on the Google Play Store that uses an artificial neural network to predict your next words. This is a big step up from SwiftKey's current 'n-gram' technology offering, which registers particular phrase, words and emojis you use often, to suggest then as you type. The new SwiftKey Neural Alpha, however, can look at the context of your sentence and "understand" its meaning, thereby suggesting an accurate word.
As the company explains it on their blog, for example, “Let’s meet at the airport” during training, the technology is able to infer that “office” or “hotel” are similar words which could also be appropriate predictions in place of “airport”. Further, it understands that “Let’s meet at the airport” has a similar sentence structure to “Let’s chat at the office”. The post also points out their program as a breakthrough in computing because, neural network language models have until now only been set up on large servers but, SwiftKey Neural Alpha has been engineered specifically to operate locally on a smartphone keyboard, despite the resources required.
And as if that wasn't enough, SwiftKey isn't stopping there. Their aim is to eventually build an artificial intelligence into the software that's so efficient, it can even type out entire messages for you, in your style and pulling context from things like events in your calendar.
