Make some room for two new premium smartphones in the Indian market – Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. The company has really gone through great lengths to ensure that these two have you full attention as they primarily sport impressive specifications and draw-dropping design.

Let’s take a quick look at the two devices and all the points that stand out:

Firstly, design

Screen. It’s all screen. That’s what catches your attention. The moment you hold the device in your hand, it feels like you’re holding a piece of screen and that’s about it. Seems like Samsung has really gone all out and given us a true, “bezel-less device”. With rounded edges and an 18:9 aspect ratio, Samsung has actually managed to make the smartphone, smaller than the Galaxy S7 Edge. It is glossy, shinny and slippery and typically leaves fingerprints all over. So be ready to give it a wipe all-day-long!

Samsung also departed with the physical home button and ha integrated a touch-sensitive home button on the display. Very similar to Apple’s 3D touch. The power button is placed on the right while the volume rocker is on the left. We have a headphone jack here along with the USB Type-C port which rests at the bottom. Towards the back we have the camera and, a fingerprint sensor. Samsung might have chosen an awkward spot for the fingerprint scanner though. But in all, a great and refreshing design.

Not to forget, display

Samsung calls it the Infinite display. And it has made sure that you get a great viewing experience with these devices. The Samsung Galaxy S8 comes with a 5.8-inch Quad HD+ Super AMOLED display while the bigger S8+ offers a 6.2-inch Quad HD+ Super AMOLED display. Like most company devices, the screen is bright and colors are rich and dynamic. But while watching videos, is exactly when you will feel the true multimedia viewing experience. You may have never experienced it on any other smartphone. Lastly, these are the first Mobile HDR Premium certified smartphones as well.

Processor, RAM and Storage

The Samsung Galaxy S8 is powered by a 2.35GHz quad + 1.9GHz quad Exynos 8895 processor paired with 4GB of RAM while the Samsung Galaxy S8+ is powered by a 4x2.3 GHz quad + 4x1.7 GHz quad Exynos 8895 octa processor. The devices include an internal storage of 64GB which can be expanded further up to 256GB using a microSD card.

Camera

Samsung has once again, delivered a good camera. The Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ both feature 12MP 'Dual Pixel' rear cameras with OIS and an f/1.7 aperture along with 8MP front-facing cameras with autofocus and an f/1.7 aperture. You can also capture 4K videos. Selfies looked smooth while the rear camera offered decent shots in low light. More details of the camera in the in-depth review will follow.

OS

The Galaxy S8 series run on Android 7.0 Nougat out-of-the box and introduce the new virtual assistant-Bixby. Bixby enters a crowded field of digital assistants powered by artificial intelligence that includes Apple's Siri, Google Assistant, Microsoft Cortana and Amazon's Alexa. Samsung said Bixby will focus on letting people control mobile apps with spoken directives. However, the virtual assistant will not feature Bixby Voice functionality at the moment.

Apart from Bixby, Samsung has made some nice changes to its TouchWiz UI as well. It feels less cluttered and seemed to work pretty smoothly in the limited time we spent with it.

Conclusion

Samsung Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 + are two beautiful Android smartphones with a great design, processors and cameras. It seems to have the entire package and you cannot really seem to find anything that you would dislike. But, what would be interesting is to see how Bixby evolves and how exactly, does the battery perform. Is it safe to say that the S8 series is far superior to its predecessors? We can only give the final verdict once we are done with the detailed review.
