After years languishing behind the scenes, Nokia is making a strong push this year to break into the big player section of the smartphone market, as evidenced by their launches at MWC 2017. The Nokia 6 and it’s lower-end counterparts the Nokia 5 and Nokia 3, all aim to capture the premium user base currently held by the likes of Apple, Google, and Samsung. Bt just how well can it match up to the competition?
Nokia 6
The Nokia 6, at first glance, looks almost exactly like the Samsung S7 from February 2016. With a smooth metal body and rounded edges, it hosts the power button and volume rockers on the right spine, with hard menu and back buttons at the bottom on either side of a clickable home button. The smartphone features a 5.5-inch IPS LCD display with a 1080x1920 resolution at 403 ppi. It’s powered by a 1.4GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor paired with an Adreno 505 GPU and 3GB/4GB of RAM. The Arte Black color variant includes internal storage of 64GB while all other colours sport 32GB storage. It can be further expanded upto 128GB via a microSD card. Running Android 7.1.1 Nougat, the smartphone comes equipped with a 16MP rear camera along with PDAF, 1.0um, f/2 and dual tone flash. It sports an 8MP front facing camera with AF, 1.12um, f/2 and FOV 84 degrees. A 3000mAh battery completes the package.
LG G6
Let’s consider now another new announcement, that of the LG G6. LG is another example of a once market leader who has fallen behind chinese rivals in the smartphone game. Now, the company’s attempt at a flagship is a reboot of their somewhat unsuccessful G5 from last year. Ditching the modularity of that device, the G6 moves back to basics, albeit with a distinctly iPhone-esque feel to it. Everything from the ultra-thin bezels, to the rounded corners, the massive display hogging the phone’s real estate to the dual camera setup seem designed to outdo the iPhone 8 before it launches. In fact, by hitting all those rumoured points we’ve been hearing about, LG may actually find some popularity in the ANdroid market.
The device features a 5.7-inch IPS LCD with a 1440x2880 resolution at 564ppi. It’s powered by a 2.3GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor with an Adreno 530 GPU and 4GB RAM. It has 32 and 64GB internal storage variants, expandable up to 256GB. It features LG’s UX 6.0 on top of Android 7.0 Nougat and runs on a 3300mAh battery. Instead of the G5’s 16/8MP dual rear camera setup, the G6 features identical dual 13MP sensors, one with f/1.8 and OIS, the other with f/2.4.
As it stands, the Nokia 6 already looks like it may be outclassed by the upcoming LG G6, thanks in particular to the dual cam setup it touts. Price points for phones haven’t yet been released, but it looks like Nokia’s only hope for a win here might be in a lower budget market than the G6. Until those announcements are made, all we can do is wait and see.
