The iPhone, which will release next year, will reportedly sport glass cases. The company aims to boost weakening demand and to see off stiff competition from rivals, including Samsung. Apple will celebrate its 10-year anniversary next year and experts believe that the company will completely redesign it’s iPhone.
According to a report by Nikkei, Foxconn, a key iPhone assembler, is developing its glass casing technology. A person with knowledge of the Apple supply chain in Taiwan said, “Foxconn has been trying glass chassis since last year.”
In addition, the device is also rumored to sport metal frames and advanced OLED panels. This is very similar to how Samsung designs its premium handsets. Ironically, Samsung would reportedly be the main OLED panel supplier for iPhones. In addition, Biel Crystal and Lens Technology would provide the glass casings.
Another source stated, “It is only natural that Foxconn is trying to come up with glass chassis as the capabilities to provide more components will bolster its standing within the supply chain and help with more orders.”
Early this year, Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst with KGI securities, had also predicted that the ‘iPhone 8’ would be the first device to depart from using a metal chassis and adopt a glass construction instead. This phone could possibly offer much by way of improved wireless reception and wireless charging, thanks to this new construction methodology.
This rumor does bear attention as Kuo has, according to a report, had a virtually perfect record in predicting significant Apple device trends in recent years. This includes foretelling the shift from their 4.7-inch screen to 5.5 inch, the introduction of the iPad Pro, predicting almost every major feature on the iPhone 6S ahead of its launch, as well as the 4-inch iPhone SE.
