It seems Facebook is experimenting with the aesthetics of its desktop website. Oddly enough, the web app is being redesigned to look more like the smartphone version.

Some users noticed a few changes on Facebook today, with a design change to chat standin out the most. Facebook’s chat windows have been redesigned to look like they do in Messenger, even down to the colour pallette swaps assigned to individual conversations from the app.

Unfortunately, some of the colour options available on your smartphone look positively garish on the web app, but at least you’re not likely to type into the wrong chat ever again. In addition, Facebook chat has the customized emoji available in Messenger, but status updates still use the very old emoji, creating a strange design disparity. Hopefully this is just the beginning of a transition for the web app, and not the full extent of it.

Aside from design changes, The Next Web also reports that some users are seeing their trending topics list a little differently than before. Instead of a synopsis line next to each topic on the list, a few users are now just seeing the number of people talking about it. Whether this is related to recent accusations that Facebook was hand crafting it’s trending list, is anyone’s guess.
