Two well known co-founders of action game hothouse Id Software have returned with a new project, "Blackroom," which industry veteran John Romero promises will be "visceral, varied and violent" once complete.

Taking place within the confines of a near-future technology company, "Blackroom" sees players become an engineer, sent into a fully immersive but malfunctioning holographic reality suite. As Romero explains in the "Blackroom" reveal video, available methods for fixing the high-tech apparatus happily coincide with classic hallmarks of the first-person shooter genre, something the pair know a great deal about.

Level designer John Romero and art director Adrian Carmack were two of the four-strong team to found Id Software in 1991, with the formative "Wolfenstein," "Doom" and "Quake" among the studio's achievements. But having largely avoided work within the first-person shooter genre since the infamous "Daikatana" in 2000, Romero again tested appetites for his work at the start of this year, releasing an alternative final level to 1993's seminal "Doom."
A total surprise and a well-received blast from the past, it capably demonstrated Romero's talent was still active, at least when it came to designing complex, clever and compulsive "Doom" design.

At this early stage, new outfit Night Work Games is trading on the power of "Blackroom" art, ideas, and the reputation of its two leads. Pitching the "Blackroom" concept in a video for crowdfunding platform Kickstarter, Romero outlined the possibilities granted by a game set within a virtual environment.

It's to feature a host of "cool locations" including ruined Victorian mansions, Wild West locales, and castles inspired by his new home of Galway, Ireland and its surrounds. Romero also emphasized some of the classic genre traits that "Blackroom" would inherit: exploration, speed, intense combat, and the skillful use of techniques that emerged from Id Software's key titles. In addition, a glut of multiplayer modes and full support for a community of enthusiast level creators would also be core features of the game.

Night Work is looking for US $700,000 in order to meet the game's Kickstarter goal; passing that threshold will then trigger the involvement of other financial partners. The crowdfunding campaign for "Blackroom" hosted here runs until May 28, 2016.
