Nokia has partnered with South Korea’s SK Broadband to offer single fibre access speeds of a mind-boggling 52.5Gbps to a few apartment buildings in Seoul. However, there is no guarantee that ever user will receive this speed but there is a higher chance that they will have the privilege to try out gigabit bandwidth.

Back in 2006, SK Broadband was the first to commercialize 2.5 Gbps GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Network technology) and again in 2014, it was again the first to launch a 10 Gbps Internet service using the 10 Gbps E-PON technology as well.

Now, in collaboration with Nokia, the provider plans to reuse the existing fiber network and access platform to boost speeds to up to 52.5Gbps.

To reach this speed, SK Broadband is reportedly using multi-dwelling units (MDUs) from HFR and Nokia's universal next generation PON solution making it possible to aggregate different technologies on the existing fiber networks.

At the moment, South Korea is tagged as the most connected country, offering top upload and download speeds universally, plans to make gigabit broadband available to all by 2020. It also has the highest mobile broadband penetration universally at 91 percent.
