The police may have arrested Ashok Jadeja and his accomplices and busted their multi-crore scam, but the big question is: can the victims, in the absence of any proof that they had lent money to Jadeja, get back what they lost to the conman? In other words, can the police or the courts return the victims the money they claim (without any proof) to have deposited with Jadeja?

Jadeja’s scam was so successful that many of his victims borrowed from others, or sold family property to give him money, in the belief that the conman would return them thrice the original amount.
Legal experts are of the opinion that the victims would find it difficult to get back their money in the absence of any proof that they had lent money to Jadeja.

His victims had such faith in the conman that they had given him large sums without bothering to ask for a receipt, promissory note or any other proof.

“Where is the proof that the victims deposited any money with Jadeja?” said Yatin Oza, senior lawyer and former president of the Gujarat High Court Bar Association. The money and the property recovered by the police will remain in the custody of the government and the court, Oza said.

“The police can’t return any money to the victims,” said additional director general of CID, VV Rabari, who is supervising the case. “It is for the courts to take a decision.

Meanwhile, Jadeja’s victims have been filing applications with the police claiming that they had given so much money to the conman. The amount claimed varies from victim to victim. The police have opened a counter at Sarkhej police station just to receive the applications.
