Complaints against an ayurvedic doctor, picked up by the Gujarat police for allegedly duping people of crores of rupees, are pouring in from the national capital after the news of his arrest became public.

The Economic Offences Wing of Delhi Police Crime Branch on Tuesday registered a case against Ashok Jadeja after receiving a complaint from one Rajesh Kumar that he was duped by the conman, who allegedly promised him to multiply his money by three times using divine power.

"We have registered a case of cheating and criminal conspiracy against Jadeja. Complaints are pouring in. A number of people have approached us. We cannot ascertain the total number of victims in the capital," a senior police official said on Wednesday. Jadeja is an ayurvedic doctor by profession.

Asked whether EOW is planning to move a Gujarat court to seek his custody, he said they were "not in a hurry".

"We are investigating the matter. Once evidence is available against the accused, we will seek his custody," he said.

After the news of Jadeja's arrest on May 31 appeared, complaints started pouring in, especially from people belonging to a particular community.

According to the official, people from Delhi went to his Gujarat base to get their money multiplied but were cheated to the tune of crores of rupees.

Jadeja and his wife Neetu were arrested while they were trying to escape from Ahmedabad and Rs 1.98 crore was recovered from them in cash, the official said adding that several cases were filed against Jadeja in Ahmedabad and Rajasthan.

Jadeja is allegedly part of an inter-state network engaged in duping people by exploiting their religious beliefs, the official said.

According to the Gujarat Police, Jadeja is accused of running away with people's money to the tune of Rs 12 crore.

He began 'operations' in Ahmedabad in January by allegedly posing as a disciple of a Goddess and allegedly promised people of his Chara community (a denotified tribe) that their money would be tripled if it is deposited with him.

After collecting huge money, Jadeja had disappeared on May 13, police said, adding three of Jadeja's associates were arrested.

The Gujarat CID had told a local court that Jadeja duped people of their money claiming he possessed divine powers and one rupee deposited with him will increase three times in a week.

Jadeja allegedly operates various accounts and lockers in his name in various nationalised banks.
