Pure drinking water will be available for everyone in Ahmedabad, but many will have to wait till 2010. Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has vowed to provide basic amenities to everyone before Gujarat celebrates 'Swarnim Gujarat Varsh' in 2010.

Responding to the Gujarat government's letter to spell out its plan for 2010, the AMC said it would renovate municipal schools, build more public toilets and upgrade chawls as part of its plan for the Swarnim Varsh.

The golden goals, as the AMC named it, also include works like providing methane, generated from dumping yards, to industrial areas, providing computers to municipal schools, new buildings for Anganwadi and giving training to 10,000 beneficiaries under UMEED programme.

Elaborating on the plan, municipal commissioner IP Gautam said, "As of now we have covered around 85% area where drinking water supply is available. By 2010, we aim to cover every part of the city, including the newly-merged areas like Chandlodia, Kali and Ranip. Similarly, drainage line network would also available across the city," Gautam said.

Majority of the works included in the golden goals were also part of the city budget for this financial year. One such project is improving drainage network in more than 200 chawls.
