A science fiction film may have a mix of potentially good ingredients — futuristic settings, great sound and visual effects, top notch actors and a whopping budget, but it may necessarily not turn into a great movie, believes Louis Savy, one of the most recognisable names in the short film genre in the world.

Savy who runs The London International Festival of Science Fiction and Fantastic Film is in India to hold discussions with television stations and exhibitors to shape up a distinct market for science fiction movies in the country.

A source who is close to Savy’s initiative in India tells us that there is a possibility of a joint science fiction project between Savy’s organisation and film-makers from India, and probably conceptualising scripts for further film projects. Though Savy says it’s too early to disclose names of those he is in talks with, he accepts, “We are initiating a collaborative project with exhibitors and television stations to bring an international science fiction film festival that will showcase the best of films from around the globe.”

In case of a potentially viable film project, how soon can we see an international collaboration? Savy says, “We are ready to sit down with the film-makers and talk of possibilities. A proper movie might take almost five years to materialise, but we must never say never to any possibility.”

Interestingly, Savy says that for a country to have great science fiction movies, an active scientific community can provide some great leads. He says, “India has developed great science projects and there is an active space programme. It will be great to see Indian scientists sitting down with film-makers to give fantastic leads on the next generation science fiction movies.”
