Even though Dubai-based NRI has sent a container loaded with religious literature, including 3,000 Qurans, to Gorewali, one of the villages in the all-Muslim Banni area abutting the great Rann of Kutch, north of Bhuj, the residents of this pastoral land are yet to receive their booty.

The Mundra customs is yet to handover the container even though it is a legal import containing valid documents. Talking to DNA, assistant customs commissioner at Mundra, Ashok Nagade, said: “Import of the holy Quran is not illegal and the consignment is okay in every respect. However, we have to follow our own procedure to our satisfaction before handing over any consignment. We will hand it over to the local consignee as soon as investigations are completed. We have already taken statement of the consignee.”

On the other hand, Banni leader, Mirkhan Mutva, who runs an educational institution at his Gorevali village alleges that the customs department is under pressure from some quarters to delay delivery. Mutva said that the Dubai-based consigner was his cousin Hyderkhan Haji Daridkhan Mutva and the Kutch-based consignee was Hyder’s son, Abdul Qayumkhan, who is a cleric and runs an institution called Nusartal Muslimi Education Welfare Society. According to Mutva, the Qurans were gifts from Dubai-based religious organizations, which is not unusual. In Banni, the muslim population is around 40,000, for which, 3,000 copies of the Quran was gifted, he said.

He alleged that said the police and other security agencies rushed to the customs depot when the consignee went to for delivery on the basis of valid shipping documents. Mutva also said he will meet the Mundra asstt customs commissioner personally as soon as he comes back from Gandhinagar.
