MJ Library has spent Rs11 L on van, which will be ready by May-end.
If all go as planned, residents of the New West (NW) Zone, areas recently incorporated within the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s (AMC) limits, will have a mobile library by the end of May this year. The civic body-managed MJ Library has already spent Rs11 lakh to buy a van for the purpose.
The mobile library will be furnished mainly with academic books, especially those related to science and technology. “We have bought the mobile van for around Rs11 lakh, and will soon ready it with racks for keeping the books.
However, since the LS elections are on and there is strict adherence to the model code of conduct, we cannot launch the library now. But we expect to launch it by mid May after elections are over,” said a source in the AMC.
The decision to introduce a mobile library for the people of NW Zone was taken because there are not many civic body-managed libraries in those areas. Besides, the idea behind a mobile library was to cater to all those people who do not wish travel to distant places to avail library services.
This will be MJ Library’s fourth mobile van after the audio-video mobile van,
van for ladies and special mobile library for children.
Meanwhile, the MJ Library is also hoping to finish the centralised operation work of all books and records. AMC had allocated Rs6 crore for the renovation of its main library building last year, hoping to find some bidders for the renovation work. As part of the renovation work, the civic body also has plans to restructure its basic infrastructure.
“Separate rooms have been created for children, ladies and students under MJ library’s plan to improve infrastructure. We will also introduce special schemes for students regular at the reading room of the library,” said the source.
Apart from that, the library also intends to come up with ‘New Arrival section’ to keep readers updated about new books. It will also make available a collection of CDs, DVDs and VCDs to the visitors.
