For a sustained economic and industrial growth, ecological development is imperative.

This was the consensus reached upon by the experts at a one-day awareness workshop titled ‘Eco Industrial Park — Planning and Management’, organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Ficci) in collaboration with Getz on Monday.

SK Nanda, principal secretary of the forest and environment department of the government of Gujarat, said that human beings are trustees of land, water and air and that their purity and sustainability must be maintained through the use of new technologies like the post pollution management technology.

The shift must be from ecology in industry to industry of ecology, said Nanda. “We should adopt clean development mechanism and cleaner processes,” he added. He urged industrialists to cover the open spaces around the factories with more plants and tress to counter the effects of carbon emission. Trees not only absorb the carbon dioxide, reducing the pollution level, but also help bring down temperature.

This apart, Nanda also emphasised on promoting the cultivation of jatropha in lands not used for agriculture. If 20 per cent diesel is saved of every 100 mn litre, carbon emission can be reduced by 20 per cent. He also said that Gujarat has already taken initiative in this regard and has already transformed the Naroda Industrial Estate into Naroda Eco Industrial Park. It is important to strike a balance between need and greed, he insisted.

With more than 50 per cent of the country’s chemicals being produced in the state, no one can better understand the importance of developing eco industrial park, said vice-chairman and managing director of GIDC Arvind Agarwal. “We must ensure that meeting people’s requirements must not come at the cost of damaging the environment,” said Agarwal. Since the small industries cannot afford to have effluent treatment plants, the state has provided financial support to setup common effluent treatment plants.

Cleaner production and recycling of waste is must for an eco industrial park, Agarwal pointed out.
