So how serious is Zaheer Khan’s injury?

Sachin Tendulkar failed to answer this question 10 minutes after Mumbai Indians’ match on Sunday night. Twenty-four hours have gone by and yet there is no reply. “We don’t know yet. The report will come tomorrow (Tuesday),” a Mumbai Indians (MI) spokesman told DNA from Johannesburg.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India, which announced the Indian squad for the World T20 on Monday, doesn’t have an update on the national team’s pace spearhead either.

“We’ve not got any report. We are hoping it’s nothing serious,” a BCCI spokesman said on Monday. The left-arm pacer is likely to be the key to India’s defence of the T20 championship in England next month.

Zaheer did not practise with his MI teammates on Monday afternoon. Team physio Nitin Patel will submit a report on Tuesday but team sources say Zaheer may have escaped a serious injury and should be okay for their match on Wednesday. Zaheer injured his bowling shoulder while fielding on Sunday night against Royal Challengers Bangalore. He did not complete his quota of overs.

Meanwhile, RP Singh, also a left-arm pacer, has expectedly been recalled. He forced his way into the T20 squad with the weight of his performance in the IPL so far. Dinesh Karthik, who has had a couple of heavy-duty performances for Delhi Daredevils recently, and Robin Uthappa, who guided Bangalore to victory over Mumbai on Sunday night, missed the bus.

But long before they made their statements, the squad was selected. As reported by DNA, the selection committee, along with skipper MS Dhoni and coach Gary Kirsten met late last month and zeroed in on the men for the June 5-21 meet.
