Union minister for science and technology Kapil Sibal, who is seeking a re-election to the Lok Sabha from Delhi’s Chandni Chowk, surprised voters on Monday with a tactic he believes will see him zoom into parliament. The Congress candidate was seen offering free rides to commuters on a solar-powered cycle rickshaw!

Sibal, who tasted his first electoral victory from Chandni Chowk in 2004, was instrumental in launching the rickshaw — ‘Soleckshaw’ —z in his constituency in October last year. Naturally, he is now trying to cash in on the “gift”.

Adding ‘solar power’ to his campaign, Sibal first offered a ride to several onlookers as he appealed for votes. After driving a few people around, he shifted to the passenger seat and campaigned in the bylanes of Chandni Chowk.

Sibal is not the only one innovating. Other candidates in the fray are also adopting novel means to catch the attention of the voter.

While Ajay Maken (New Delhi) and Sandeep Dikshit (East Delhi) of the Congress joined morning walkers in their constituencies, BJP candidate from New Delhi Vijay Goel recently spent time with a group of laughter therapy and yoga practitioners. Meera Kanwaria, the BJP candidate from Northwest Delhi, too, has joined a yoga camp.

Cricketer-turned-politician Chetan Chauhan, who is contesting against Dikshit, is trying to win over the youth by holding cricket camps. Chauhan recently held a coaching session at the Feroz Shah Kotla.

BL Sharma ‘Prem’, the BJP candidate from Northeast Delhi, too, is making all efforts to prove to his electorate that he is one of them and thus deserves their vote.

Prem, known to most as the hard-line Hindutva face of the BJP in Delhi, has literally taken his campaign to the drawing rooms of his voters.

The septuagenarian is focusing on door-to-door canvassing.

Once he’s in a residential colony, he chooses a home and holds a ‘drawing room meeting’ of locals.
