The first thing that comes to our mind when we hear the word “Akshaya Tritiya” is the gold; but there is another aspect to this auspicious day – traffic jams that ruled the roost in several parts of the city on Monday.

With people flocking jewellery stores across Bangalore to buy at least one gram of gold to make the rest of the year a prosperous affair, traffic snarls were a scene to reckon with in most parts of the city.

However, these traffic woes did little to dampen the enthusiasm of gold buyers, who were prepared to brave everything, from waiting in the traffic, to struggling to find a parking slot and standing in queues for their turn to buy the yellow metal.

However, the city’s traffic police were all geared up with precautionary measures to handle traffic snarls at all important junctions in the city.

“Traffic jams during the occasion of Akshaya Tritiya are a known fact. We know how important the day is for the people. Hence, we deployed several men at crucial locations across Bangalore to avert traffic jams. We also restricted parking to certain locations to avoid any kind of chaos in the city,” informed Mahadevaswami, a senior police constable with Chickpet police station.

Jewellery store owners also took adequate measures to solve customers’ parking woes.
Damas store in Jayanagar provided its customers with specialised parking lots. “We don’t have adequate parking facility. But even the traffic congestion don’t deter our customers from visiting our store,” said Kishore Kumar, assistant manager, Tanishq.
Many customers also placed their orders in advance to avoid the traffic rush on Monday.

Many shopkeepers also opened their stores earlier than usual and closed only late into the night to help those customers who had to attend to their office duties during the prime time of the day, but who still wanted to celebrate the auspicious day by buying gold in any form.

Security at the stores was another concern. With the heavy rush, many stores had to beef up their security arrangements.

Many jewellery stores also went ahead and announced a high alert to avoid unforeseen events.

The city police also stepped up security to attend to any untoward incidents in jewellery stores.

“In order to maintain law and order in the city on this auspicious day in jewellery stores, we appointed several officers at crucial locations,” said a senior police official.
