Rajgarh is the fortress of the Congress’ emerging strongman and former chief minister Digvijay Singh aka ‘Munnu Raja’. He is not contesting this time but he is fighting his brother and BJP MP Luxman Singh aka Chunnu Raja in order to clear air on rumours that his sibling has the tacit support of the big brother.

On the face of it Digvijay is trying hard to plot the defeat of his brother who joined the BJP five years ago against his wishes. He says he has thrown his weight behind Congress candidate Narain Singh, but his rivals in party say the fielding of a “non-descript” candidate against Chunnu shows that Digvijay supports his brother.

For public consumption, it is a contest between an erstwhile royal who has a fleet of cars, hefty bank balance and immovable assets and a less-known Narain whose prized possession is a bullock cart. He has two accounts in Bank of India, which have Rs305 and Rs1,307 as balance. Among his other possessions are 22 cows and four buffaloes.

But the Congress high command would have to wait till May 16 before they draw conclusions about Digvijay’s loyalty to the party.

Meanwhile, the polarisation of power in the Gwalior-Rajgarh-Guna belt, identified by the two erstwhile royal families of Scindias and that of the Munnu-Chunnu combine, is also changing. Both the royalties are locked in similar political battles of one-upmanship among the family members. And that is why Digvijay has chosen to close ranks with the scion of Scindia family and Congress candidate Jyotiraditya.

Burying their old rivalry within the Congress, the two have come together and share dais.

Contrary to Munnu-Chunnu rivalry, Jyotiraditya has till now refrained from campaigning against his aunt Yashodhra Raje, the BJP nominee from Gwalior. But he is certainly not sparing any effort to consolidate his hold in the area as an heir-apparent of the family.
His decision to make a common cause with Digvijay is also being viewed in this context.
