Demand for the resignation of the principal of a city school over the death of a girl student due to "negligence" got shriller on Monday with students launching a signature campaign to the effect as the school reopened after three days.

As soon as Modern School Vasant Vihar reopened, students launched the signature campaign, demanding the resignation of principal Goldie Malhotra, initiation of criminal case against her and better medical facilities in the school.

They alleged that school authorities were responsible for the death of their friend Akkriti Bhatia last Monday. Over 100 students signed the petition, claimed one of them.

"We went in a group and spoke to our friends and collected their signatures for the cause of justice for Akkriti. We will give the petition to the management," she said.

The students have also demanded a public apology from the principal over the issue.

The school was closed since Friday following protests by parents and students over death of Akkriti due to "negligence" by authorities.

The classes were held as usual on Monday, the principal said. However, a student claimed that attendance in the school was low as pupils were "scared".

The parents and students had demonstrated against the principal on Thursday and shouted slogans, blaming her for Akkriti's death. The authorities had then announced that the school would remain closed on Friday and Saturday. The school also deferred a function, which was scheduled on Saturday, to a later date.

The school management has also set up an external inquiry committee comprising eminent academicians and noted personalities to look into allegations of negligence.

Meanwhile, another inquiry committee, set up by the Delhi government, has started probing the case.

The committee headed by regional director of Education Sunita S Koshik had visited the school on Saturday and spoken to teachers and authorities about the incident.

The team has been given the mandate to find out whether there was any lapse on part of the school authorities, leading to Akkriti's death. The committee will submit its report within 15 days.

The autopsy report has said that the girl died due to an asthma attack.

Her family is likely to approach the court, seeking registration of FIR in the case. Although the family lodged the complaint with the police on April 22, an FIR is yet to be registered in the case.
