Police here have booked the homeguard, who allegedly tried to move towards Priyanka Gandhi at an election meeting, on charges of interference in official duty and misbehaving with a policeman.

Homeguard Jawan Jitender Kumar was overpowered by Congress workers and SPG personnel at Gandhi's election meeting in Harchandpur village on Sunday when he tried to come closer towards the dais where she was seated.

Kumar fought with a police constable when the latter tried to stop him. Congress workers have said that the jawan was muttering something and did not appear to be in a proper mental condition.

"A case has been registered under Section 353 of IPC against the homeguard on charges of interference in police duty and engaging in scuffle with the police," Rae Bareli SP Tarun Gaba said.

The "erring" jawan was arrested by the police on Sunday. He would be produced before the court on Monday.

Police sources said the section applied against him did not entitle him for bail from the police station level.

The SP, however, said that there was no attempt of breach of Priyanka Gandhi's security by the jawan.
