RSS worker stabbed to death

A RSS worker was stabbed to death and another seriously injured by a group of unidentified assailants near Mattannur, near here, early on Monday, triggering fresh spell of tension in the district.

The RSS worker Sajith Kumar (29) and his friend Biju were attacked with deadly weapons by the assailants as they were returning home Sunday night after taking part in a marriage reception of their friend at Kalanthode, police said.

The duo was attacked by suspected CPI(M) members who were said to have been hiding behind a nearby well.

Sajith Kumar, a bus driver, who sustained multiple injuries succumbed at a hospital in Thalassery around 0115 hours, while his friend was shifted to the Kozhikode Medical
College Hospital with serious injuries.

A local CPI(M) leader was stabbed to death allegedly by the BJP-RSS members near Kuthuparamba near here in March.

Members of the rival parties in the district have been involved in a series of political clashes in the past few months, resulting in the death of five persons.

Meanwhile, the BJP and RSS has called for a day-long hartal in Mattannur Municipal limits and nearby Chavassery, Kizhoorand Thillankeri panchayat limits on Monday.

Public transport vehicles are keeping off the roads and shops and business houses would remain closed in the area for the day, police said.
