Security has been beefed up in border areas of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana following an agitation by angry farmers from UP, who had blocked Meerut-Karnal highway for six-hours to register their protest against a ban on entry into Haryana for selling wheat, official sources said here on Saturday.

The trouble began on Friday when Haryana police erected barricades at Bidoli check-post to prevent entry of wheat farmers from UP following an order from the state government, the sources said.

Wheat growers from western UP sell their crop in Haryana as the government of the state has fixed a better price (MSP) for the crop compared to that by the UP government.

Meanwhile, BKU National spokesperson Rakesh Tikait said that the Uttar Pradesh government has failed in providing adequate facilities and resolve the problems being faced by the farmers of the state.

The farmers are forced to take their produce to neighbouring states like Harayana owing to the policies of the state government, Tikait alleged.
