With the first two phases of the Lok Sabha elections completed, the Congress party’s eagerness to make a post-poll alliance with the Left Parties seems to be becoming stronger day by day.

After prime minister, Manomohan Singh, now Rahul Gandhi too made his party’s intentions clear on this score saying that Congress’s doors are open for anyone willing join hands with it.

“I am no one to make a comment on this. That’s for the party president and the prime minister to decide. But as a general principle, I can say that doors of Congress are open for anyone willing to join us,” Gandhi told reporters on Saturday, when specifically asked whether Congress is ready for a post-poll alliance with the Left Parties if required.

Rahul also ruled out the possibility of his assuming the chair of Prime Minister of the country after the elections. He said: “I will refuse since I don’t have the experience.
He also said that for the time being he will rather concentrate on building up the organisational network of Congress.

Speaking on the occasion, he also attacked the Left Front government in West Bengal for poor implementation of the National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme. “I am really shocked to see that the benefits of the pro-poor scheme were not reaching the people in districts like Purulia,” he said.

According to him, the perception was that Uttar Pradesh and Bihar were the worst performers in this regard. “Now, I am shocked to see what is happening in West Bengal. I am not attacking the Left Front government. But the reality is that tremendous wastage is taking place in the state,” he said.

However, he carefully avoided justifying Congress’s seat-sharing agreement with Trinamool Congress in West Bengal. As regards to Trinamool supremo, Mamata Banerjee, Gandhi said he admires her because of her simplicity.

Rahul also recalled his fond memories of Banerjee as a child. “I used to see her in my father’s (Rajiv Gandhi’s) house. And also when my grandmother (Indira Gandhi) was alive. “I have fond memories of Mamataji. I haven’t met her for a long time. I would like to meet her,” he said. Describing her as a “lady of the people”, he said: “My sense is that she likes to be in contact with the people. These are values I appreciate.”
